On Sunday, November 5th, 50,000 runners passed Bay Ridge Prep in the annual NYC marathon! In celebration of our faculty and staff running, many BRP community members including the BRP Student Band showed up to support. 4th Avenue was lined as far as the eye could see with New Yorkers holding out signs, noise makers, and hands out for high fives, all in support of the runners. BRP Upper School is fortunate enough to have a front-row seat to NYC’s favorite day of the year!
The marathon is an incredibly exciting day where many New Yorkers come together to cheer on 50,000 runners to help them reach the finish line. Helping fund many important charities, the marathon is how every NYC runner can support an important cause. The Bay Ridge Prep community was very excited to again be a part of such a special occasion, and this year we had a total of 7 BRP community members running:
Stacy Betro, Upper School Parent
Gerard Betro, Upper School Parent
Libby Jancsy, Middle School Faculty
Gina Marshall, Upper School Faculty & Middle School Parent
Lisa Neesemann, Upper School Faculty & Lower School Parent
Marc Sturm, Upper School Parent
Dr. Lisa Neesemann, Head of the Science Department at the upper school ran her 9th NYC marathon, and her 18th marathon in total. She says, “Every marathon is a unique experience and this year's NYC marathon was no exception. Perfect weather, and tons of crowd support …I personally had tons of fun, ran a good race, and could still walk up the stairs Monday morning…Thanks to everyone who came out to support, it is appreciated by the runners more than you might know!”
The BRP Student band, run by Mr. Scott Tofte, arrived at 8 a.m. in order to be prepared to start playing for the elite runners at 9. They played a vast set list, spanning from pep band classics like Seven Nation Army and The Final Countdown to rock songs like Smells like Teen Spirit. The BRP band played for over 2 hours to cheer on the runners and get spectators excited.
It was all smiles outside 7420 as the clamorous screams and shouts of strangers filled the air in order to cheer on the thousands of marathon runners. Bay Ridge Prep is so excited to have once again been a part of a part of such a special occasion for NYC!
