Spring sports are here! A few weeks into April, the various warm weather teams are hitting their stride, and our athletics department has something for everyone!

Last year, we had many exciting accomplishments from our students. Coming back from a stunted season the previous year due to Covid-19 restrictions, there was much to celebrate for the sports department. From tennis, to track, to baseball, all of our teams performed wonderfully. Our girls varsity softball team even placed first in the ISAL league for the first time since 2016! Sienna Cruz (’23), a captain of the softball team, shares her expereince: “The win last year was such a great feeling for pretty much everyone. Because we had a relatively small team, we sometimes had to play games with not enough players, but we still pushed through to the playoffs. We just had to work harder, which made the win feel so much better” The team is practicing and getting ready to start playing.

But more wins from our longstanding teams isn't the only fun thing we can expect this year. In addition to the aforementioned sports, the students of BRP have started the new golf team, and they are excited to get started. Junior Michael Ryan plays on the golf team: “I want to play with my friends on a good team and to get better at tournament style play and learn more to become a better player.” While he also enjoys playing golf leisurely, having the opportunity to play with friends on a school team is exciting for Michael. But like many of our BRP teams, this one isn't just for people with previous experience. They are also seeking beginners who want to learn the sport. For example, Mika Batsiyan ('24) is joining as a novice.: “I want to experience a new sport and broaden my horizons” Whether you are a beginner player or an experienced one, the golf team is looking forward to making great memories and teaching new skills to all members!

Just like Mika, there are other students who are trying sports for the first time. Valentina Schapira (’24) is also trying softball for the first time this year: “Personally I have been starting a lot of new sports. Having such a supportive team and coaches is my favorite thing about our spring sports.” Connecting with teammates that share the same passion and excitement for sports helps us connect as a team. With similar drive from the coaches, the teams become a community and help us grow not only as athletes, but as students.

Just as education is fundamental in school, so are sports. They help us stay healthy, connect with our classmates, learn new skills, and work together. No matter what sport you are doing in BRP, it is important that you have fun and support your school teams. So be sure to come out and show your BRP spirit!
